  2. Jason says:

oh cool, cheers mate! i’ll check it out.

  3. Frails says:

Jason- There’s a PA 135 on ebay right now that looks to be in great shape.

  4. Jason says:

    cheers Frails, thats awesome!

im looking at a sound city 50plus on ebay atm but shipping to australia will cost equal (or more) to the cost of the amp, its soooo annoying, so i probs wont end up picking it up which is a shame.

I’m going to put a more detailed review onto Harmony-Central, I just need a little time with the pedal first. From a delay pedal standpoint, I will say the Nova stands so far above any other delay pedal I’ve tried. There’s a cleanliness about it that I’ve never heard before in a delay pedal. I love my DMM and DE-7. But the versatility of this unit coupled with the delays that come from it is just another level.

Regarding the PUPS, I can finally give an educated opinion on them. What I did was this….I put the CS 54’s into my Blackie along with the Callaham trem block, saddles, springs and hardware. I then performed a setup on the guitar. On my other Strat (Cream-colored MIM 60’s Classic), I installed the EMG-SA’s along and again performed a setup.

The difference between the two is that the EMG’s are more to a rockin’, humbucker sound and the CS 54’s allow the true tonal character of the guitar and pickups to come through. There is nothing wrong with either pickup, and I would state that I think I have the best of both worlds. I play both guitars equally and love them both equally. If I ever feel the need to drop down to D or just play a little Alice In Chains, the cream Strat performs perfectly. However, if I want to jam the Take A Breath solo, Blackie nails it along with the Compressor, TD, ColorDrive and Nova.

Sorry, the PA135 was traded for a Vox AD120VTH head, which is now for sale. Fantastic modeling amp that has no weaknesses. I still have my original PA135 and that one stays. I’m selling the Vox to purchase a Hiwatt or Sound City.

[Thanks for the review Frails! I completely agree regarding the pickups… although I haven’t used EMGs in a while, they and the CS 54 gives you the best of both worlds and as there’s no secret where I stand on this matter I’d like to add that the CS 54 is the most versatile PUs I’ve ever tried… for Gilmour’s tones that is. – Bjorn]

  6. Jason says:

that TC delay definately sounds cool, only a couple of reviews on harmony central as yet but there should be more soon. also didnt gilmour use a TC during pulse?

while your in a sharing mood Frails, how about telling me how your CS pups compare to your emg’s? man im dying to know! also i remember you posting something about a PA 135 in the past (may be wrong tho), this still up for sale?

    Jason

[The new TC stompbox is based on the TC Electronics TC-2290 Digital Delay that David used during the Momentary and Division Bell tours. – Bjorn]

Evening Fellas! Today I came home to a wonderful present…the TC Electronics Nova Delay pedal was on my doorstep. I found one from Same Day Music for $209 as someone bought it, returned it and they marked it as such on their site. Now, what I’m about to say should be taken very very seriously (huge smile on my face right now)….GO OUT AND BUY THIS THING! WOW! So clean and just soooo what I’ve been looking for. Just wonderful delay, both analog and digital!!! I immediately set up a few of the presets to match Bjorn’s suggested settings for Gilmour. What a snap it is to bounce from the Time solo into Run Like Hell.

Hopefully Bjorn will write a more articulate review later. But I just had to share the news…..this thing is a must as the end all, do all delay.

[Thanks for sharing Frails! I’m very tempted now… – Bjorn]

  8. Collin says:

So can anyone else not wait for the final four days before Remember That Night comes out? I’m going down to get it right after school lets out.

  9. Ryan says:

a quick question about your new “animals” oriented board….are you tossing the cs-2?

[Nope… Dynacomp. I’ll post some pictures very soon! – Bjorn]

  10. daniel: i think you’re right, the ND1 combined with the DMM seems a really versatile set!

  11. o says:

I wonder why there’s not any word on the Gilmour strat on fender.com
isn’t it beeing released next week ?

[That’s what they said. Strange that we haven’t heard anything but then again, I guess they want to release it with a bang. Maybe they’ve got some agreement that both the guitar and the DVD will be released simultaneously. – Bjorn]

  12. charaf says:

    Bjorn,

Good reading indeed. Many thanks for all this regular and valuable informations.

I recently bought a used line 6 Echo Pro after i have read this comment from a user in harmony central who owns a real Binson Echorec :

” love David Gilmour and Jimi Hendrix tones, and since I play in a Pink Floyd Tribute Band I need a good sounding delay unit. The Echo Pro is perfect for creating Gilmour’s spacey and ethereal delays. The real Binson is way better but I’m not willing to bring the Binson to every gig, since it’s a delicate unit, so the Echo Pro fill its shoes nicely.
If it will ever got stolen I’ll definitely replace it, I bought the unit because of the Echo Platter simulation but the other simulations are pretty good as well.”

    Link: Harmony Central

I own also a TC G force rack i hope, with the two racks to cover both 70s and 80′ period.

    Cheers and keep it up.

[Thanks for the tip Charaf! – Bjorn]

  13. Mt says:

The binsons… its incredible how beutifull sounds a “not perfect effect” to our human ears… a really philosofical issue… But then again, we aren’t perfect… maybe thats why…

Btw, man, you should check the old VOX AC30 model (60’s era with Alnico blue Bulldogs)… Its a small amp, compared with any hiwatt, even the combos… but the tone, man, the tone… its orgasmic… At first i thought that the amp will crank early and put some dirt in my tone, ruining every thing, but i was completely wrong… the amp stays clean very well… And i can freely say thats its much more warm and “alive” than any Twin that i ever used (Including a ’67 vintage one)

“For those about to rock I salute you”
    Cheers

[Hi Mt! Yeah, those old Vox amps are very nice indeed! – Bjorn]

  14. Barney Chamorro says:

Bjorn, you should consider the TC Nova delay for your next pedal. Its the new DD-20 for Gilmour stuff. It actually sounds better than the DD-20 and very close to the original TC2290.

[Yeah I’ve tried it very breifly and it sounded really nice! – Bjorn]

  15. Sebastian says:

    Hi Björn,

Great article and amizing soundclips, too!

Sorry, but I’ve got a off topic question:
Do you use 0,155 or 0,255 patch cables (the George L’s cables)?

    Sebastian

[Thanks Sebastian! I use 0.155. The 0.255 are better for instruments cables. – Bjorn]

  16. Dan Dartington says:

Yesterday I got to try out the new Boss RE-20 Space Echo pedal. Great fun, very flexible and all kinds of possible weirdness. Might be the way to go in pursuit of that tape echo sound.
I’m torn between that and a DD-20 for when I get round (and save up the money) to upgrade to a decent delay. Maybe I could get both… :-)
Anyone tried out the RE-20 yet?

  17. RyanG says:

Bjorn, is your EM a new model or an original? I’ve read that the new reissues are not as good (surprise surprise). Have you had any problem with yours? Are there any other flanger pedals you’d recommend?

[I bought mine new in 1998 I think, so I guess it’s a reissue but I’ve never had any problems with it and I love the sound. There’s a slight volume drop as with all EMs but there’s no noise, which is a huge problem with the early ’76 model. – Bjorn]

  18. Collin says:

I still haven’t gotten around to sending you a picture of my rig. I am really enjoying it, though.

[No worries. I’d love to see it tho, so please send a pic when you’re ready. – Bjorn]

  19. Roberto Lecchi says:

What about the Akai E2 Headrush?
    Did anyone tried it?

    Roberto

  20. Steve says:

Thanks for a great article, I must admit that I lust for one of these echoes even though I cannot afford one.. It is a good time for delay fans though.. T rex replica, nova delay, timefactor, plus the good old favourites, maxon’s, EH memory man, tube tape echo, amongst so many others.. I really wish there was an easy way to compare them all!

    [Thanks Steve! – Bjorn]

  21. Daniel Krause says:

The tape setting does sound good IMO, as does the analog setting.
But…I’d rather have a DMM as a tape-style echo and use the ND1 for the heavier delay stuff.

    Cheers,

    Daniel

  22. daniel: thanks for the info. have you tested the ND1 tape sim? is it good?

  23. Ron Esquerra says:

Hey Bjorn, Thanks again for another great article. I’ve been hooked on the David Gilmour Gear forum and keep reminding myself to check your site once a week or so.

A few pedals I had questions about. Have you used the Ibanez AD9? also have you had a chance to try the Marshall EH-1 Echohead? The clips on that one are very interesting. Also, do you think the new stereo memory man will be close to the deluxe in sound?

Thanks again…Oh and about Callaham…I’m going to order an S model guitar from them in the style of David’s #0001 strat. Only three short years and I’ll have it…

[Thanks for still checking in :) The Ibanez AD9 is very similar to the DE7. I haven’t tried the Marshall or the new Memory Man. The Deluxe Mem Man is awesome tho. – Bjorn]

  24. Ernest Peske says:

Great article & very good research!
What would Pink Floyd have been without Tape Echo?

One little question regarding your last article about the Callaham bridge: “David had his bridge flat (trem. can only move down)”. Bjorn, since you have the same setup, do you do this for tuning stability or perhaps also for increasing sustain / sound?

    Cheers,
    Ernest

[Thanks Ernest. If you look at pictures of David’s guitar you can see the bridge is flat on the body. This is a standard setup on vintage Strats. I’ve tried a couple of things but the guitar definitely stays better in tune with this non-flating setup. I don’t know if it improoves the sustain… it might. – Bjorn]

  25. zoobandblues says:

Great article!!! Such amazing gifts from the human mind. I was wondering if the DE-7 is able to produce triplets? And if so, what delay type settings will work best. Thanks

[Thanks! No, the DE-7 is very basic… – Bjorn]

  26. Daniel Krause says:

    @ Kelton: Hi again,
I think the Memory Man is a bit better than the Delayla…for vintage binson-like tones.
The Nova Delay is really awesome…I tried it for about an hour in the shop, and I ordered one right away. Very cool features like very tight triplets and that sort of stuff. And ofcourse veeeeryyyy long delay, lol.

  27. tim says:

hey bjorn have you tried out the fulltone tube tape yet.

    [Nope. – Bjorn]

  28. There’s also the Diamond Memory Lane, but seems expensive to me.

  29. Daniel: wich one is the best? I’m saving some money to buy a delay, but haven’t decided yet. I think I need a digital one, to create more sophisticated effects, and a analog one, to warm up some tones. The digital should have tap tempo, for confortable tempo changes on stage without getting on my knees every time.

Until now, I’m really interested on the TC Electronics ND1, which has an affordable price and seems very versatile. The Eventide TimeFactor seems to be paradise, but a little over my budget. The memory man doesn’t fit my needs, since it doesn’t has tap tempo. there’s also that Boss’ reissue of the Roland Space Echo (in a pedal), it sounds interesting too…

  30. maxime says:

    Interesting! Wonderful pictures :)

  31. Daniel Krause says:

@ Kelton: I use the Deluxe Memory Man myself and I must say it does sound quite a bit like the binson and I use a Delayla which sounds great too.

  32. Sylvain says:

Bjorn, I can’t achieve the sound of your second clip with my DE-7. How do you do ?
    A+

[You have to hit a not or strum a chord, then turn up the feedback knob to about 3 o’clock. You should hear that the tone slowly oscillates… Adjust the volume too for a smooth effect. – Bjorn]

  33. So, one question: what is the budget “binson echorec”? is there a special delay i should buy or any good analog delay can do the job? i mean, is that a magical and unique tone or it can be taken out of other good machines?

[I think the closest sim out there must be the Electro Harmonix Memory Man. Very warm and true to the old Binson. Then there’s the T-Rex Replica, Cornish TES etc… For a cool sounding budget model, I recommend the Ibanez DE-7. – Bjorn]

  34. Sylvain says:

    Great, thanks !
    About delay : Link
Nice song and nice guitar sound (but I think it’s a little polished by the final mix. It was more “rough” in concert).
    A+

  35. Deck says:

Bjorn, did you only use the DE-7 for the second sample ?
I really love this sound !

[Yep. The DE-7 has a surprisingly nice tone and as you can hear a pretty cool oscillation effect when you turn up the feedback. – Bjorn]

  36. Luciano says:

    Great article, as usual, Bjorn.

For those looking for a Binson: Link

The price, in US dollars, is about US$ 1.650,00.
Just “a bit” above my budget.

    Cheers,

    Luciano.

  37. Matt says:

    HEy,

Amazing article and good clips. I ran into a binson once at a used store…. i was just getting into effects and it looked crap so i’m sure you know what that ment..
Now I just kick myself for not gettin the under priced item.

I never realised how close the de7 and memory man can get

[Thanks! The DE-7 is great considering the price but the Memory Man is a different league… Very close to the Binsons. – Bjorn]

  38. ChrisZ says:

Thank you Bjorn for the article. Keep on doing great job :)
    Cheers!

    ChrisZ

    [Thanks Chris! – Bjorn]

  39. Bjorn, did you test the TC Electronics ND1? Looks very promising!

[Only very briefly… Sounded very nice. Lot’s of cool features. – Bjorn]

  40. Daniel Krause says:

    Hi Bjorn,

again a great article! The Binson was indeed a very big piece of Gilmour’s tone.

By the way…I remember my dad having some Binson’s. I wonder if he still has them…would be cool.

    Cheers,

    Daniel

[You better check the attic! – Bjorn]

  41. Jeremy says:

    amazing

I love how you included clips. It really gave me a better understanding of what you were trying to explain.

Is there anywhere to get one of these today?

[EBay… They don’t make these anymore. Expect to bleed tho… – Bjorn]

  42. Ruben says:

    Hi,

Great and very informative Article! Again I leraned a lot! Keep it come.

    Regards

    Ruben

    [Thanks Ruben! – Bjorn]

  43. brett says:

Great Article! Loved it ! I really like the audio clips you had to let us hear what you were talking about. I’m sure glad my delay pedal can do the Echo oscillation!

    keep up the good work

    -brett

    [Thanks Brett! – Bjorn]

  44. Frails says:

Awesome job as always, Bjorn! Any chance of posting the DE-7 settings for those clips? Thanks in advance-

[Thanks Frails! time 12:00, repeat 12:00, level 9:00, echo mode. – Bjorn]

  45. Ryan says:

the coolest (not to mention coolest looking) effect ever…. i wish i could find one just lying in an old antique shop….that would be cool

i like the old looking pic of it too!

keep up the good work, Bjorn!

[Thanks Ryan! I will! – Bjorn]

  46. tim says:

    great job
nice to see more stuff about the early gear.
i would kill for one .

[I have always loved David’s early tones. It’s a simple setup but a magic tone! – Bjorn]

  47. Collin says:

Yummy! A nice big Echorec Article! I’ll start reading right away. I know it’ll be good.

I’m down to counting the days until Remember That Night… I can hardly wait.

[The DVD looks very promising! – Bjorn]

  48. Mike says:

Wow! Lots of good stuff in there. The clips are helpful, too. Great job as usual!! I’ve determined that this is the best website on the internet.

    [Wow! Thanks! – Bjorn]

  49. Leandro says:

Really cool article!! I have been excpecting this for long time hehe…. Thanks man!

    Leandro

Ps: really cool pics as ussual!

    [Thanks Leandro! – Bjorn]
